Fluorescin Ampoules Diagnostic agent Composition : Each ampoule (5 ml) contains: Fluorescein sodium 500 mg Properties : The yellowish-green fluorescence of the injection demarcates the vascular area under observation distinguishing it from adjacent areas. Indications & usage : Fluorescein ampoule is used in ophthalmic practice as a diagnostic agent . For angiography of retinal vessels, to detect occlusion or obliteration of retinal vessels, vascular malformations, neovascularization, changes in vascular permeability, ocular tumors and defects in the retinal pigment epithelium. Angioscopy of fundus and iris vasculature. Detection of lesions and foreign bodies. Contra-indications : Known hypersensitivity to Fluorescein. Side effects : The intravenous injection of Fluorescein sodium may produce nausea & vomiting. Extravasation is painful. Hypersensitivity reactions range from urticaria to occasional instances of severe anaphylaxis. Cardiac arrest & fatalities have occurred rarely. so, facilities of resuscitation should available whenever Fluorescein sodium is administered intravenously. the skin & urine may be coloured yellow but this is transient. N.B.: Fluorescein sodium can stain, clothing, soft contact lenses on contact. Drug interactions : No interactions between fluorescin and other drugs have been reported . Warnings & precautions: Caution is required in patients with a history of allergy or bronchial asthma. Care must be taken to avoid extravasation during injection as the high pH of Fluorescein solution can result in severe local tissue damage. Don't mix or dilute with other solutions or drugs to avoid physical incompatibility reaction. Never to use Fluorescein while the patient is wearing soft contact lenses because the lenses may become stained. Whenever Fluorescein is used, flush the eyes with sterile normal saline solution and wait at least one hour before replacing the lenses. Avoid angiography on pregnant patients especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. Caution should be exercised when Fluorescein is administered to a nursing woman. Dosage & administration: Adult : 5 ml (500) mg injected rapidly into antecubital vein. Children : 0.035 ml ( 3.5 mg ) / Ib. injected rapidly into antecubital vein.
