Penicid L.A
Vials
Parenteral long acting penicillin

Composition:
Each vial contains
Benzathine penicillin 1,200,000 I.U.

Properties:
Penicid L.A. has mainly bactericidal action against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is a highly potent antibiotic which acts during the stage of active multiplication through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide. Benzathine penicillin has an extremely low solubility and so, slowly released from IM injection sites, it is hydrolyzed to penicillin G. It diffuses well into body tissues and fluids, but penetration into the C.S.F is poor except when the meninges are inflamed. It is rapidly excreted in the urine in therapeutic concentrations.

Indications & Usage:
Treatment of infections caused by micro-organisms that are highly sensitive to penicillin as Streptococcal (including pneumococcal infection and streptococcal endocarditis), gonococcal and meningococcal and also for Anthrax, diphtheria, gas-gangrene, leptospirosis and treatment of lime disease in children.
Treatment of early syphilis.
Prophylaxis against rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart diseases and acute glomerulonephritis.

Contra- indications:
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Side effects:
Hypersensitivity reactions like skin rashes and urticaria may occur.
Diarrhea and antibiotic-associated colitis may rarely occur.

Drug interactions:
Probenicid and some non -steroidal anti - inflammatory agents prolong the
half -life of benzyl penicillin by competing with it for renal tubular secretion.
Some bacteriostatic agents such as chloramphenicol or tetracycline interfere with
active bacterial growth and inactivate the drug .

Benzyl penicillin may interfere with some diagnostic tests such as those
for urinary glucose using copper sulphate , and some tests for urinary or serum
protein .

Warnings & precautions:
Caution is required in case of known history of allergy.
Do not inject into or near artery or nerve.
